Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Vertigo is a feeling of motion or dizziness. It basically feels like you are moving, even when you are not. Imagine feeling as if you are on a boat or an amusement ride when you are just standing still or sitting down. There are many causes of vertigo and symptoms. Causes can be migraines, motion sickness, and drinking too much alcohol. Vertigo symptoms can include perspiration, abnormal eye movements, difficulty standing or walking, nausea, and vomiting.

Causes of Vertigo

Several things can cause vertigo including;

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo-This is the most common form of vertigo. Those who suffer from this benign paroxysmal positional vertigo get the sensation of movement, even though they are stationary. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo can be treated.

Migraines- Migraines can cause vertigo. Vertigo can cause migraines.

Meniere's Disease-Along with vertigo, Meniere's Disease symptoms may include ringing in the ears and loss of hearing. Those who suffer from this can have severe vertigo and then lengths of time without any symptoms.

Head Traumas or Neck Injuries- Traumas or injuries can cause vertigo that eventually goes away on its own.

Motion sickness

In addition, drinking too many alcoholic drinks can cause symptoms of vertigo.

The length of vertigo symptoms can range from a few minutes to hours. The symptoms can be constant or episodic. A friend of mine suffers from episodic vertigo. When her vertigo comes on, her symptoms are really bad. She can barely stand up or walk. She has to stay in bed for 2 or 3 days and gets pretty sweaty (almost like hot flashes).

For the most part, vertigo is not life threatening and it can be treated with prescription medications. At times, it puts you out of commission. Your life is basically put on hold until you get your footing again. Always consult with your doctor if new or severe symptoms arise. Vertigo is not a life sentence, just a huge inconvenience!
