What's the Issue with School Uniforms?

The debate over pros and cons of school uniforms has been ongoing for a while now as to whether or now children wearing uniforms to school is beneficial or if it has no impact. There are several reasons why wearing a school uniform is advantageous and there are reasons to support that wearing a school uniforms doesn't benefit children. While most private schools still have their students wear uniforms, even public schools have opted for a uniform consisting of a polo shirt and dark pants or a skirt.

Eliminates Distractions-Children won't be looking at one another's clothing. Who is wearing what, etc..

Gives Children a Professional Feel-It's almost like wearing a work outfit rather than play clothes.

Uniforms are Low Cost-Parents will not have to spend as much money on all of the latest fashions for their children-just fashionable shoes.

Wearing a Uniform Promotes School Spirit-Uniforms usually has the school name and mascot on them.

Why Children Should Not Wear a School Uniform

Suppresses Individuality-Children don't have the opportunity to express themselves and who they are through their choices in clothing.

Causes Discipline Problems-Children can harass one another due to clothing choices.

Wearing a Uniform Has No Link to Academic Achievement-Research has not shown that wearing a uniform to school supports children's academic progress.

Pros and Cons of School Uniforms

Wearing a school school uniform may or may not be beneficial for your child. In some ways, it makes a lot of sense. Your child wears the school uniform, doesn't get teased and school, and you save a lot of money. It may not promote academic success, but that is not the only important factor. On the other hand, you want children to express themselves and turn into their own people. Children wearing school uniforms has pros and cons that truly depend on your personal preference and circumstances.
